Mexico Uses eco-friendly Paving Process

eco-friendly-paving-process-used-in-mexico.JPGA recent pilot program recently commenced in Toluca, Mexico which has seen rubberised asphalt or asphalt rubber (AR) used within a paving process. This process has been used in many countries around the world to date as it produces longer lasting roads and helps address the waste tyre problem.

The project was in the planning stage for two years which has seen several companies involved, each providing expertise in a particular area, for example; the availability of crumb rubber, the hot mix production and paving and the asphalt-rubber blending unit. Juan Carlos Castro, equipment fabricator of Phoenix industries stated “I am very pleased to finally see an AR project being done here and we are proud to be part of helping to bring this excellent technology to Mexico”.

The crumb rubber used was 0.0 – 1.2mm size and the overall thickness was 50mm (placed over a newly constructed binder course). ‘Phoenix industries are looking to take the technology to Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, they feel that with the technology in place in Mexico the changes and benefits will be seen quickly and AR will become the number one choice.
